"Pair-Play" is a "divertimento" based on a peculiar instrumental ensemble (clarinet, horn, marimba, piano, violin and cello) where each couple of instruments of the same family (winds, percussions and strings) plays as a soloist in a specific section of the composition while the remaining instruments form the background or double the "solo" part.
In the first section of the "divertimento" (bars: 1-108), after a climax performed by percussions and strings, the clarinet and the horn enter as the soloist pair; the following section (bars: 109-231) is dedicated to the preeminent role of the string couple while in the third part of the composition (bars: 232- 362) the main actors are the percussions (marimba and piano). A contrapuntal "coda", ending the piece, highlights the division of the instrumental ensemble in pairs and is resuming some specific thematic elements of the previous sections. .
The composition is exploiting a peculiar tonal environment where the extensive deployment of intervals like seconds, thirds and exceeding fourths overcomes their own functional harmonic meaning to become a structural concept aimed, together with a distinctive mix of the instrumental timbres, at creating a coloured "naïf" atmosphere, arising often from a polytonal context (from the Program note, pag. 3).
